Pain? Swelling? Something broken or knocked out? Just describe it in your own words. We’ll let you know if you need urgent dental care in Toowong.
We’ll let you know what to do until we see you. You’ll also find some simple first-aid steps below for common dental emergencies.
Call (07) 3916 4155 or go straight to your nearest emergency department if you have:
Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital or Princess Alexandra Hospital Not sure how serious it is? Call us and we’ll help you work it out.
If it hurts, has broken, swollen or suddenly changed, it’s worth giving us a call. You don’t need to diagnose the problem yourself.
Already called us? Here are a few things you can do while you’re waiting to be seen.
Hold the tooth by the crown, not the root. Gently rinse it in milk, saline, or under cold running water for no more than 10 seconds. Don’t scrub it or store it in water. Try placing it back into the socket. If not, keep it in milk or your own saliva.
Keep any broken pieces and bring them with you. Rinse your mouth with warm salty water and avoid chewing on that side. If there’s a sharp edge, sugar-free chewing gum can temporarily cover it until you’re seen.
Take your usual over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the packet, if it’s suitable for you. A cold pack against the outside of your cheek may help. Never place aspirin or other tablets directly against the gum. Keep your head elevated at night.
Apply a cold pack to the outside of your face for around 15 minutes at a time. Don’t apply heat or try to squeeze or drain the swelling. If swelling is spreading or you’re having difficulty breathing or swallowing, call (07) 3916 4155 or go straight to an emergency department.
Keep the crown if you have it and bring it with you. Avoid chewing on that side until you’re seen. Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy may help protect the tooth in the meantime.
Bite firmly on clean gauze or a clean cloth for 20 minutes without stopping to check it. Stay upright and avoid rinsing, spitting, smoking or hot drinks. If the bleeding remains heavy or won’t stop, seek urgent care.
First, we’ll work out what’s wrong. Then we’ll explain your options and give you the costs in writing before any treatment begins. No surprise bill at the end.
X-rays are quoted separately, where needed.

1. First, Tell Us What Happened: We’ll listen to what’s been happening, when it started and where it hurts before taking a closer look.
2. We Find the Problem: We’ll examine the tooth and surrounding area and may recommend an X-ray if we need to see what isn’t visible from the outside.
3. You See What We See: We’ll show you what we’ve found where possible and explain it in plain English. Then we’ll talk through the treatment options and costs before you decide how you’d like to proceed.
4. We Get to Work: If the problem can be properly treated during your emergency appointment, we’ll aim to do that. If it needs more time, we’ll focus on managing the immediate problem and arrange another appointment for further treatment.
