To Us, Little Teeth Are a Pretty Big Deal

Your child’s first impression of the dentist can shape how they feel about dental visits for years to come. That’s why we want those early experiences to be positive ones. We help mini humans feel at ease in the chair and build healthy habits from the start.

And hey, we’re raising kids too. We know that getting them to brush properly isn’t always quite as simple as “brush twice a day” makes it sound. So, you’ll find us giving practical advice that works in real family life and a team that loves caring for growing smiles.

Trusted kids’ dental care for families across Toowong, Bardon, Auchenflower and surrounding suburbs.

First Tooth? Time to Say Hello.

Your child’s first dental visit is usually recommended when their first tooth appears or by their first birthday, whichever comes first. But don’t worry, there’s not much dentistry happening just yet.

Early visits are about saying hello, taking a ride in the chair, touching the cool tools and making the dentist feel like a normal place to be. We’ll also give you simple advice on brushing, diet and those all-important early habits to help keep teeth healthy.

Think: more getting acquainted, less getting down to business.

Mini Smiles. Big Picture.

Baby teeth matter more than many parents realise. Around 42% of Australian children aged 5 to 10 have had decay in their baby teeth, according to the National Child Oral Health Study. Healthy habits started early are the best predictor of healthy teeth as an adult. Regular check-ups and preventive care can help catch small problems early, before they become bigger, painful and more costly to treat.

CDBS? We’ve Got You Covered.

Enamel & Mint accepts the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) for eligible children, helping families access essential dental care through Medicare.

CDBS can be used towards a range of eligible dental services, including:

Check-ups · X-rays · Teeth cleaning · Fissure sealants · Fillings · Extractions · Root canal treatment

Not sure if your child is eligible or how much of their benefit is remaining? Just ask us. We can help you check.

Six Gentle Steps,
From Hello to All Done.

From getting settled to that final high five, here’s what to expect from your kids’ dentist in Toowong.

First, We Say Hello Properly

A kids’ check-up and clean usually takes around 30 minutes. There’s no rush, ever. We’ll start by saying ‘hi’ and give your child the chance to get comfortable and take in the room.

A Quick Chat with You

We’ll ask about your child’s medical and dental history, any medications and how brushing is going at home. Sore spot? Thumb sucking? Mouth breather? Tell us what you’ve noticed. Nothing’s too small (or too silly) to mention.

Time to Count Some Teeth

Now for the important bit. We’ll check each tooth for plaque, calculus and signs of decay, look at the gums and see how their bite and jaw are developing. Everything’s explained in kid-friendly language as we go, so there are no mysterious dentist goings-on.

X-Rays, Only if Needed

Sometimes we need a little more information than we can see with our eyes alone. If X-rays are recommended, we’ll explain why. Up to two are included in your child’s check-up at no extra cost.

A Gentle Clean + Polish

Time for that minty-fresh feeling. We’ll gently clean and polish their teeth before applying fluoride to help protect the enamel. Your child sets the pace, so if they need a breather, a wriggle or a quick reset, that’s absolutely fine.

What We Found + What Comes Next

Before you leave, we’ll talk you through what’s looking healthy and whether anything needs attention. If treatment is recommended, we’ll keep it simple: explain why and talk through the options.

CDBS?

Got a Nervous Little One?
We’ve Got You.

Some kids jump straight into the chair. Others need to inspect every button, ask 47 questions and decide whether today is the day. Both are perfectly fine with us.

There’s no expectation for your child to sit perfectly still or get everything done in one visit. We’ll meet them where they’re at, take things at their pace, play their favourite show with headphones on while we look after their teeth. They’ll have the time they need to feel comfortable with us.

They’re in the Driver’s Seat

We’ll show them what we’re doing, answer their questions and explain what happens next. Need a break? Hand up and we stop.

Nothing Has to Happen on Visit One

Sometimes a successful first appointment is simply meeting us, having a ride in the chair and counting a few teeth. Easy.

You Stay Close (and We Keep Them Comfy)

Parents are always welcome to stay right beside them. And with ceiling-mounted TVs, noise-cancelling headphones and cosy blankets on hand, there are plenty of little comforts to help them settle in.

And Then There’s Dr Lillian

If your child needs a little extra time or patience, they’re in good hands. Dr Lillian is a mum of two herself and loves caring for kids, especially those who need a little longer to warm up.

More Ways to Keep Smiles Healthy + Strong

Fillings: If we find decay, we’ll talk you through what we’ve found and the treatment options before anything goes ahead.

Fissure Sealants: A thin protective coating can be applied to the deep grooves of adult back teeth to help reduce the risk of decay.

Custom Sports Mouthguards: Made from a digital scan of your child’s teeth for a secure, comfortable fit while they play sport.

Removable Expansion Plates: For some growing children, a removable plate may be recommended to help create space or address certain bite concerns as the teeth and jaws develop.

Frequently Asked Questions

A good rule of thumb is when their first tooth appears or by their first birthday, whichever comes first. Early visits are usually less about treatment and more about getting familiar with the dentist, checking that everything is developing as expected and helping you establish healthy habits at home.

Ideally, every six months but every child is different. We’ll suggest a schedule based on your child’s teeth, gums, development and individual needs. If you’re looking for children’s dentistry in Toowong, we’re always happy to welcome new families.

You’re not alone and we’re here to help. As a child-friendly dentist in Toowong, and parents ourselves, we take things at their pace, explain what we’re doing in kid-friendly language and give them plenty of opportunities to ask questions or take a break. Parents are welcome to stay close too.

They are! Baby teeth help children eat and speak and hold space for the adult teeth developing underneath. Keeping them healthy also gives us the opportunity to establish good brushing and dental habits well before the Tooth Fairy starts getting busy.

No. We only recommend X-rays when they’re clinically needed to give us information we can’t get from looking at the teeth alone. If we recommend them, we’ll explain why, and up to two are included in their check-up at no extra cost.

Yes. If you’re looking for a CDBS dentist in Toowong, Enamel & Mint accepts the Child Dental Benefits Schedule for eligible children. CDBS can be used towards a range of eligible services, including check-ups, X-rays, cleaning, fissure sealants, fillings, extractions and root canal treatment. Not sure whether your child is eligible or how much benefit they have remaining? Just ask us and we can help you check.

Not every child does. Fissure sealants may be recommended when the deep grooves in the back teeth are more likely to trap plaque and food. They create a protective coating over these grooves to help reduce the risk of decay. We’ll check your child’s new adult molars as they come through and let you know if we think sealants could be useful.

If they play a sport where there’s a risk of knocks to the teeth or jaw, we may recommend one. Our custom sports mouthguards are made from a digital scan of your child’s teeth for a secure, comfortable fit. Because kids’ mouths keep changing, we’ll also let you know when it’s time to think about a replacement.

As part of your child’s regular check-ups, we’ll keep an eye on how their teeth, bite and jaws are developing. In some cases, Dr Lillian may recommend a removable expansion plate to create space or address certain bite concerns. If their needs are better suited to orthodontic care, we’ll explain that too.

We keep our kids’ dental costs nice and simple. A check-up and clean is $99 for children aged 6 and under, $149 for ages 7–12 and $199 for ages 13–17. Up to two X-rays are included where needed, at no extra cost. Gap-free check-ups and cleans may also be available for children with eligible private health insurance.
