While You Wait
A Little Dental First Aid

Already called us? Here are a few things you can do while you’re waiting to be seen.

Knocked-Out Adult Tooth

Hold the tooth by the crown, not the root. Gently rinse it in milk, saline, or under cold running water for no more than 10 seconds. Don’t scrub it or store it in water. Try placing it back into the socket. If not, keep it in milk or your own saliva.

Broken or Chipped Tooth

Keep any broken pieces and bring them with you. Rinse your mouth with warm salty water and avoid chewing on that side. If there’s a sharp edge, sugar-free chewing gum can temporarily cover it until you’re seen.

Toothache

Take your usual over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the packet, if it’s suitable for you. A cold pack against the outside of your cheek may help. Never place aspirin or other tablets directly against the gum. Keep your head elevated at night.

Swelling

Apply a cold pack to the outside of your face for around 15 minutes at a time. Don’t apply heat or try to squeeze or drain the swelling. If swelling is spreading or you’re having difficulty breathing or swallowing, call (07) 3916 4155 or go straight to an emergency department.

Lost Filling or Crown

Keep the crown if you have it and bring it with you. Avoid chewing on that side until you’re seen. Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy may help protect the tooth in the meantime.

Bleeding After an Extraction

Bite firmly on clean gauze or a clean cloth for 20 minutes without stopping to check it. Stay upright and avoid rinsing, spitting, smoking or hot drinks. If the bleeding remains heavy or won’t stop, seek urgent care.

This is general first-aid guidance while you’re waiting to be seen. If your symptoms are severe or getting worse, call us or seek urgent medical care.

Clear Costs, Before Anything Goes Ahead.

First, we’ll work out what’s wrong. Then we’ll explain your options and give you the costs in writing before any treatment begins. No surprise bill at the end.

X-rays are quoted separately, where needed.

*Subject to provider approval.

From “Ouch” to a Plan.
Here’s What Happens.

1. First, Tell Us What Happened: We’ll listen to what’s been happening, when it started and where it hurts before taking a closer look.

2. We Find the Problem: We’ll examine the tooth and surrounding area and may recommend an X-ray if we need to see what isn’t visible from the outside.

3. You See What We See: We’ll show you what we’ve found where possible and explain it in plain English. Then we’ll talk through the treatment options and costs before you decide how you’d like to proceed.

4. We Get to Work: If the problem can be properly treated during your emergency appointment, we’ll aim to do that. If it needs more time, we’ll focus on managing the immediate problem and arrange another appointment for further treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you need a same-day emergency dentist in Toowong, we’ll do our best to find you the earliest suitable time. For anything urgent, call us rather than booking online. That way, we can find out what’s happening and how quickly you need to be seen.
No. Our emergency dental care in Toowong is available to new patients and existing ones. So, if you’ve never visited Enamel & Mint before, that’s absolutely fine. Give us a call and tell us what’s happened.
An emergency consultation is $80, which covers an assessment of the problem and a discussion about your options. Emergency treatment starts from $199, depending on what’s needed. If X-rays or treatment are recommended, we’ll explain the costs, and provide them in writing, before going ahead. No surprise bill at the end.
Tell us when you call. Seriously, you won’t be the first. We’ll take things at your pace, explain what we’re doing and give you the opportunity to pause whenever you need to. Right now, our job is simply to find out what’s causing the problem and help you understand your options.
Not necessarily. An extraction is just one possible treatment for a dental emergency. We’ll assess the tooth first and explain the options that are appropriate for your situation. Nothing goes ahead until you understand what’s involved, know the cost and are happy to proceed.
Antibiotics may be prescribed when clinically appropriate, but they don’t necessarily address the underlying dental problem. If you have swelling, a severe toothache or other signs of infection, it’s important to have the cause assessed rather than relying on antibiotics alone.
Still come in. Pain disappearing doesn’t necessarily mean the problem has been resolved. If you’ve had a severe toothache or other dental pain emergency, it’s worth having the tooth checked so we can find out what caused it in the first place.
Absolutely. We provide urgent dental care in Toowong for children as well as adults. If your child has knocked out or damaged a tooth, has significant toothache or you’re simply not sure how urgent the problem is, give us a call and we’ll help you work out what to do.
Yes. We accept all major private health funds and offer on-the-spot HICAPS claiming for eligible services. Bring your health fund card or digital membership details with you and we can process your claim at the appointment.
Enamel & Mint is open on Saturdays and late on Wednesdays. If you need an emergency dentist on the weekend, call us and we’ll let you know our earliest available appointment. If we’re closed and you have spreading facial swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding or serious facial trauma, call 000 or go straight to your nearest hospital emergency department located at either the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital or the Princess Alexandra Hospital.
